Stone sculpture

EN

To speak of stone is to speak of time, evolution, perpetuation - of everything that has happened. As such, I believe that stone is one of the few natural artistic mediums that has power by itself, that is complete, a whole, and so it shouldn’t be used merely as a mean to communicate an end.

On my work process, the choice of the stone is the first and most important moment. From that, I’m able to establish dialogues and relationships between each fragment, which is more difficult to do on drawing. In my opinion, the formal, conceptual and symbolic values of a stone sculpture are created by the chosen stone, and not the opposite, making this choice the drive of the whole project. The stone contains in itself the entire path of my process and thinking.

In addition, I try to use pieces of stone that are leftovers or excesses from the construction industry, or that are discarded because of “inferior quality” by the extraction and transformation industry. Working this way means that a lot of the rocks I use have fractures and are therefore too fragile for any intervention. In this case I use them as I found them, in their raw state, making all the qualities of the stone the focus of the project.

From the moment I crossed paths with stone sculpture until now, my reflections about it remain unaltered - perhaps because I’m still looking for its purpose, or perhaps because I know that its purpose can be simply summed up by this material I use - stone. What's left for me to do is to face it, respect it, understand it and synthesize it. Bring it back to its origins and find the right ways to communicate its entirety.
