The textile process
The rules for starting a new project: looking, feeling and smelling wool.
That’s what I’ve been doing lately — getting ready to start a new collection of handmade tapestries. Until the time comes to wash more wool, I find myself daydreaming about what the already clean wool in my studio could become.
The freedom that comes with processing the wool myself can be a bit overwhelming… There’s so many ways I can go with it: should I make thin or chunky yarn? / what color should I naturally dye it? / 1-ply or 2-ply? / textured or regular yarn? / should I weave it in the table loom or the frame loom?
I’ve never been a planner when it comes to art, so my solution is to keep all the process intuitive and take it step by step, trying to feel what comes next naturally, not forcing an idea at the start.
I guess it makes things a bit more challenging, but definitely more rewarding too.
Can’t wait to see what this wool turns out to be.
